promoting accessibility
Common to the role of an Occupational Therapist is an assessment of an individual’s home to identify potential personal and environmental risk factors that inhibit access and participation. During a home safety assessment, an Occupational Therapist observes the mobility of an individual within the context of their home environment to identify accessibility and safety barriers and provide solutions to minimise the risks.
When providing recommendations, TOTAL REHAB® utilises AS1428.1 – Design for Access and Mobility as a guide on aspects of physical accessibility relevant to design outcomes. This Australian Standard provides minimum design requirements and can be used as a legal reference to provide access in existing buildings, new builds and private dwellings.
